Aging-in-Place Bathroom Upgrades for Maryland Homeowners
Safer, easier bathrooms that still look like home
Quick answer: The most useful aging-in-place bathroom upgrades are a low- or no-threshold walk-in shower, properly anchored grab bars, a comfort-height toilet, slip-resistant flooring and better lighting. Small safety upgrades can start around $1,500–$4,000; a full accessible bathroom remodel typically runs $15,000–$35,000 in the Baltimore area.
Most people want to stay in the home they love. The bathroom is where that plan is usually tested first — the CDC notes falls are a leading cause of injury for older adults, and wet, hard surfaces are a big part of the risk. The good news: an accessible bathroom doesn’t have to look clinical.
The Upgrades That Matter Most
1. A walk-in shower
Replacing a tub with a low-curb or curbless shower removes the biggest trip hazard in the house. See our guide to tub-to-shower conversions.
2. Grab bars that are actually anchored
Suction-cup bars and towel bars aren’t grab bars. We install blocking inside the wall and mount rated bars where you need them — by the toilet, at the shower entry and on the shower wall. The ADA standards for grab bars are a helpful reference for heights and clearances.
3. A comfort-height toilet
A seat a couple of inches taller than standard makes sitting and standing much easier on knees and hips.
4. Slip-resistant floors
Smaller tiles (more grout lines) and textured porcelain give better grip, especially on a shower floor.
5. Lighting and controls
Bright, even lighting, a night light, rocker switches and lever handles on faucets and doors help at any age.
6. A shower seat and handheld shower
A built-in bench or fold-down seat and a handheld sprayer on a slide bar make bathing safer and more comfortable.
7. Wider doorways
If a walker or wheelchair may be needed, widening the door to 32–36 inches is far easier during a remodel than after.
Plan Ahead, Even if You Don’t Need It Yet
If you’re remodeling anyway, ask for blocking behind the walls for future grab bars, a curbless or low-curb shower and a vanity with knee space. It costs little now and saves a second remodel later.
What It Costs

- Tub-to-shower conversion with safety features: about $8,000–$16,000.
- Full accessible bathroom remodel: about $15,000–$35,000.
