Basement Remodeling & Finishing

Basement Remodeling & Finishing Done Right

A finished basement is one of the best ways to add living space without an addition: a family room, home office, guest suite, gym or a second bathroom. In Maryland homes the basement is often the only place left to grow, but it is also where moisture, low ceilings and tight mechanicals make a finish go wrong if it is rushed.

Our crew has finished and remodeled basements across Central Maryland for more than 12 years. We check for moisture first, pull the permit, frame and insulate, run electrical and lighting, hang and finish drywall, lay flooring made for below-grade spaces and trim it out. One licensed team, one written price and one schedule from start to finish.

Why it matters

What makes a basement finish last

  1. 01

    Moisture comes first

Finishing over a damp wall traps water behind drywall. We check and address moisture before framing starts.

  2. 02

    Permits and egress

Maryland counties require permits for basement finishing, and bedrooms need a code-compliant egress window. We handle both.

  3. 03

    Plan around mechanicals

Furnaces, water heaters and ducts need access and clearance. We design soffits and closets around them so the space still works.

Questions

Basement FAQs

How much does it cost to finish a basement in Maryland?

Most full basement finishes in the Baltimore area run about $30–$60 per square foot. A refresh of an already-finished basement is often $8,000–$20,000, and adding a bathroom typically adds $12,000–$30,000. You get a written, itemized estimate before any work starts.

Do I need a permit to finish my basement?

Yes. Baltimore, Howard, Carroll, Harford and Anne Arundel counties require a building permit for basement finishing, plus electrical and plumbing permits when those trades are involved. We pull the permits and schedule the inspections.

Can you add a bathroom to my basement?

Usually, yes. If the existing drain lines sit above the fixture height we may need an up-flush or ejector system. We check this during the free estimate so the price is accurate.

How long does a basement remodel take?

A refresh can take 1–2 weeks. A full finish usually takes 4–8 weeks depending on size, permits, inspections and whether a bathroom is included.

Are you licensed and insured?

Yes. Handyman on Demand is a licensed Maryland home improvement contractor (MHIC #117279), fully insured, and every job comes with a 1-year labor warranty.
