Baltimore City’s Local Bathroom Remodeling Company
Baltimore City is a market unlike any other in Maryland — a dense urban grid of rowhouses, rowhomes, and brick townhomes that span more than a century of construction, mixed with upscale neighborhoods in Roland Park, Guilford, and Homeland, and growing communities in neighborhoods like Hampden, Canton, Fells Point, and Federal Hill. Handyman on Demand serves Baltimore City homeowners with bathroom remodeling that understands rowhouse construction: limited space, shared walls, older plumbing systems, and city permit requirements that are entirely separate from Baltimore County.
Baltimore City rowhouses are their own construction type — narrow, shared-wall buildings with plumbing that runs through the party walls and basements in configurations that most suburban contractors are not prepared for. We work in Baltimore City rowhouses and know their specific considerations: very limited bathroom square footage, plumbing walls that are often shared with neighbors, older cast iron and galvanized systems, and Baltimore City permit requirements that are different from every surrounding county. We pull Baltimore City permits and know the city's Department of Housing inspectors.
Bathroom Remodeling Services We Offer in Baltimore City
We work in all types of Baltimore City homes — historic brick rowhouses and rowhomes throughout most of Baltimore City, upscale single-family homes and large colonials in Roland Park, Guilford, Homeland, and Ruxton adjacent communities, newer townhome and condo construction in Canton, Harbor East, Federal Hill, and other revitalized neighborhoods, and mid-century single-family homes in neighborhoods like Hamilton, Lauraville, and Govans. Here is what we handle for Baltimore City homeowners:
Custom Walk-In Shower Installation
We demo old fiberglass tub surrounds and enclosed showers and build custom tile walk-in showers tailored to your Baltimore City home. Frameless glass enclosures, built-in niches, bench seating, rain shower heads, and full waterproofing systems designed to last decades.
Full Bathroom Gut & Remodel
When the bathroom needs more than a refresh — we go down to the studs, reconfigure layouts, move plumbing where needed, pull permits with Baltimore City, and build everything from scratch. Tile, vanity, lighting, electrical, plumbing, painting — one contractor, one timeline, one point of contact throughout.
Vanity, Storage & Fixture Upgrades
The most popular bathroom upgrade we do throughout Baltimore City. We remove the unused tub, properly waterproof the footprint, and build a modern walk-in shower in its place. Perfect for aging-in-place, safety upgrades, or just a more functional daily routine.
Tub-to-Shower Conversions
New vanities, double-sink conversions, floating cabinets, recessed medicine cabinets, LED mirrors, smart exhaust fans, GFCI outlet upgrades, and updated faucets. Quick upgrades that dramatically modernize the space without a full gut remodel.
Tile Installation & Replacement
Floor tile, shower walls, tub surrounds, and accent walls. Ceramic, porcelain, stone, large-format, and mosaic — properly set on the right substrate with correct grout and sealing so it does not crack, shift, or grow mold behind it.
Basement & Half-Bath Additions
Adding a bathroom where there was not one before — rough-in plumbing, permits with Baltimore City, and full finish work. Ideal for finished basements and home additions throughout Baltimore City.
Baltimore City Rowhouse Bathroom Remodeling
Rowhouse bathrooms in Baltimore City are small — typically 5x7 feet or smaller — and share plumbing walls with neighbors. Designing a beautiful, functional bathroom in a narrow city rowhouse requires specific planning skills: we maximize every inch with floating vanities, recessed medicine cabinets, tub-to-shower conversions that create the illusion of more space, large-format tile on the floor to reduce grout lines, and proper waterproofing that accounts for the shared-wall construction common in Baltimore City rowhomes.

We recently completed a master bathroom renovation with Handyman on Demand LLC, and they are the best contractors we have ever worked with. Sobir and Sara were professional, communicative, patient, and truly listened to what we wanted. Their crew was skilled, respectful of our home, and left everything clean at the end of each day. The craftsmanship and attention to detail are outstanding — we couldn’t be happier with the result and highly recommend them.

We remodeled our master bathroom, replaced the old vanity, installed new tile, removed the tub and expanded the shower, installed a heater fan, new fixtures, and wainscoting. Handyman on Demand did an outstanding job - their team was professional, courteous, clean, and quick. We appreciate that they were really willing to work with us throughout the project. We ended up expanding the work and adding some extra recessed ceiling lights, replaced all the toilets throughout the house, and replaced our tankless hot water heater. They were able to complete everything quickly, provided outstanding drywall detailing, sanding, and painting, and kept everything clean throughout the entire effort. We would not hesitate to recommend them, and will be using them for future projects.

February 2026: Handyman on Demand sistered joists; renovated a half bathroom; repaired drywall; mounted a TV; hung wallpaper; painted several rooms; and installed new lights and light switches. Their team showed up on time, did high quality work, and cleaned up each day before leaving. They also accommodated an expanding scope and design changes along the way. Their office was communicative about costs and timeline and answered questions I had before and during the work. I will definitely work with Handyman on Demand again!

Bathroom Remodeling Tips for Baltimore City Homeowners
Know What Baltimore City Homes Are Built Like Before Demo Starts
Baltimore City rowhouses — especially those built before 1950 — commonly have original cast iron or galvanized plumbing, lead supply stubs at fixtures, and plaster or horsehair plaster walls. Before any bathroom remodel in a Baltimore City rowhouse, we assess the plumbing condition and wall substrate. Lead supply stubs need to be replaced. Plaster walls must be replaced with cement board in wet areas. We document all of this at the free estimate.
Waterproof Everything Behind the Tile — No Exceptions
Baltimore City rowhouse bathrooms often have plumbing walls shared with neighboring units. Waterproofing in shared-wall configurations is critical — a water failure in your bathroom can damage your neighbor's property. We use full Schluter Kerdi or RedGard membrane on all wet surfaces and seal every penetration completely. This is non-negotiable in shared-wall rowhouse construction.
Design Around Your Existing Plumbing First
In Baltimore City rowhouses, drain locations are fixed — usually in the floor near the center of the bathroom — and cannot typically be moved without significant access work through the basement. We design every rowhouse bathroom remodel around the existing drain location. In most cases this works perfectly and enables a great result.
Ventilation Is Your Best Defense Against Mold
Baltimore City rowhouses typically have small, sometimes windowless bathrooms with minimal natural ventilation. A properly ducted, humidity-sensing exhaust fan vented to the exterior is essential. In rowhouses, this usually means running ductwork through the ceiling to a roof vent or through a rear wall. We assess the ventilation path at the estimate and specify the right solution.
Large Format Tile Makes Every Bathroom Feel Bigger
Small Baltimore City rowhouse bathrooms — typically 5x7 feet or less — benefit enormously from large-format 12x24 tile on the floor. Fewer grout lines make the tiny space feel larger and are significantly easier to clean. A wall-hung or floating vanity adds visual space in a very tight footprint. We design around these constraints specifically.
Always Pull Permits in Baltimore City — It Protects You at Resale
Baltimore City has its own permit department separate from Baltimore County. City permits are required for plumbing, electrical, and structural bathroom work. Baltimore City inspectors and Baltimore County inspectors are entirely different departments with different requirements. We know both. We pull Baltimore City permits and manage the inspection schedule with the city's Department of Housing.
