This Towson project by the numbers

  • 1 wall removed to open the kitchen to the living areas
  • ~3 weeks of on-site work, with cabinets ordered ahead
  • 1 crew for demo, drywall, plumbing, electrical and tile
  • 1 year labor warranty on the work

The challenge

A Kitchen Walled Off From the House

This Towson family’s kitchen was outdated and closed off. Whoever was cooking was cut off from everyone else, and the walls kept daylight from reaching the work space. The homeowners wanted a kitchen that worked for entertaining, cooking and everyday life.

Their wish list: an open layout, more natural light, modern cabinets and counters, better flow to the dining and living areas, and an island with seating where the family could gather.

  • A closed-off kitchen cut off from the dining and living rooms
  • Dated walls that blocked light and sightlines
  • Tight work space and no place for family to sit while someone cooked
  • Old cabinets and counters with little usable storage

How we built it

From Wall Removal to Walkthrough

Our licensed team handled every trade: demolition, drywall, plumbing, electrical, tile and finish carpentry. Because cabinets were ordered before demo, the on-site work took about three weeks.

  1. Before demo

    Design & ordering

We measured, planned the open layout and island with the homeowners, and ordered the cabinets ahead so the kitchen wasn’t torn out while we waited on materials.

  2. Week 1

    Wall removal & rough-in

We took out the wall between the kitchen and the living areas, then ran the plumbing for the island sink and new wiring for recessed lights and the pendant.

  3. Week 2

    Drywall, cabinets & tile

New drywall and recessed lighting went in, followed by the shaker cabinets, the hex tile floor in the cooking zone and the island base.

  4. Week 3

    Counters & finish

Granite counters with a seating overhang, white subway backsplash, undermount sink, floating shelves, appliances and a final walkthrough.

The result

A Bright Kitchen That Flows Into the Home

The new kitchen opens straight into the living and dining areas. Warm wood floors, natural stone and open sightlines tie it together, and the island has become the spot where the family gathers every day.

Materials and finishes

  • Cabinetry Maple-toned shaker cabinets for a warm, clean look
  • Countertops Granite with natural veining and an overhang for seating
  • Island Custom island with an undermount sink and pull-down faucet
  • Backsplash Classic white subway tile with clean grout lines
  • Flooring Hex tile in the cooking zone, hardwood through the dining area
  • Lighting Recessed lights across the ceiling plus a pendant over the island
