What we build

Walk-In Showers Built by Our Own Crew

Swapping a tub you never use for a walk-in shower is one of our most requested projects. It makes a small bathroom feel bigger, it is easier to clean and it is safer as you get older. One licensed crew handles the demo, plumbing, waterproofing, tile and glass.

Primary bathroom with a glass walk-in shower and freestanding tub

Curbless & Low-Curb Showers

A zero-threshold or low-curb entry is easier to step into and looks clean. The floor is recessed or built up so it slopes to the drain. Typically $14,000–$20,000.

  1. 1

    Free in-home estimate

We measure the tub or shower, check the floor and walls, and talk through curb, glass, tile and storage options.

  2. 2

    Written, itemized quote

A clear price, what is included and a realistic schedule. No pressure and no surprise add-ons.

  3. 3

    Permit and materials

Moving a drain or valve usually needs a plumbing permit. We file it and order tile, valve and base before demo.

  4. 4

    Demo and rough-in

Tub and surround out, framing checked, drain and valve moved, and blocking added for future grab bars.

  5. 5

    Waterproofing and tile

A full membrane behind and under the tile, then the niche, bench and tile work. This is the part that matters most.

  6. 6

    Glass and final walkthrough

Custom glass is measured after tile and installed about a week later. We check every detail with you before we call it done.

Homeowner tips

Before You Remove the Tub

  1. 01

Keep one tub in the house

If it is your only tub and you have young kids or plan to sell soon, convert the primary bath and keep a tub in the hall bath.

  2. 02

    Do not skimp on waterproofing

A full membrane system behind the tile is what keeps water out of the walls and subfloor. You never see it, and it matters most.

  3. 03

    Curb or curbless?

A low curb is simpler and costs less. Curbless looks clean and is easier to walk into, but the floor has to be recessed or built up.

  4. 04

    Add a niche

A recessed niche keeps bottles off the floor and out of the way. Plan it between studs before tile goes up.

  5. 05

    Choose slip-resistant tile

Smaller floor tiles with more grout lines and textured porcelain give better grip on a wet shower floor.

  6. 06

    Plan for later

Ask for blocking behind the walls for grab bars and a handheld shower on a slide bar. They cost little now and save a second remodel.

Questions

Walk-In Shower FAQs

How much does a walk-in shower cost in Maryland?

Most tub-to-shower conversions in the Baltimore area cost $6,000–$14,000. A simple base with a tiled surround sits at the low end; a fully tiled shower with frameless glass, a niche and a bench is at the high end. Curbless showers typically run $14,000–$20,000. Every estimate is free, written and itemized.

How long does a tub-to-shower conversion take?

Most conversions take 4–8 working days. Custom glass is measured after the tile is done and installed about a week later.

Do I need a permit to replace a tub with a shower?

Moving a drain or valve is plumbing work that usually needs a licensed plumber and a county permit. We handle the permit and schedule the inspections.

Will removing my tub hurt resale value?

Usually not, as long as another bathroom in the home still has a tub. Many buyers prefer a large walk-in shower in the primary bath.

Can you make a shower safer for an older parent?

Yes. We build low-curb or curbless entries, built-in benches, handheld showers on a slide bar and slip-resistant floors, and we add blocking in the walls for grab bars. We also offer a senior discount.

Are you licensed and insured?

Yes. Handyman on Demand holds Maryland Home Improvement Commission license MHIC #117279 and carries insurance. Our labor is backed by a 1-year warranty.
